Standing proud with its distinctive Georgian frontage, The Gate House sits adjacent to the river Monnow at the start of the main street through the market town of Monmouth. The Gate House is uniquely located at the site of the medieval Monnow Bridge, the only remaining fortified bridge in the UK, dating back to circa 1277 AD, replacing an earlier wooden crossing. Being a border town, this Bridge and Gate are symbolic of Monmouth and historically has been of great importance both strategically and economically. The Gate House dates back centuries, however, it has a fresh and contemporary feel whilst offering all the traditional qualities on which we pride ourselves. We are the only family owned and operated independent free house in the town, offering a service by people who care – our staff are professional, friendly and efficient. Every care is taken to ensure any visit is enjoyable, be it for a quick coffee, al fresco lunch or a leisurely dinner it becomes a most enjoyable and memorable interlude. Hospitality personified!

The town of Monmouth is crammed full of history and its pleasing location between the rivers Wye and Monnow, below the hills of the Royal Forest of Dean, make it a popular tourist destination. Monmouth is central to the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Wye Valley and surrounds, and is within easy reach of The Midlands, M4 corridor and most motorway networks.

Monmouth is the County Market Town and hosts a traditional produce market every Friday and Saturday. Monmouth is a shoppers paradise, a long street full of niche and eclectic shops, the bustling market town has a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.

The Gate House elevated sun terraces are picturesque and a perfect al fresco rendezvous – enjoy this tranquil venue and watch the swans and ducks on the river – in the countryside or in town? Enjoy a long, leisurely lunch on this stylish sun trap or a romantic evening watching the sunset over the hills with a delightful jug of ice cold Pimms. The ambience compliments the whole experience uniquely with the perfect backdrop of the towns main landmark and the local gateway to Wales.
